How we take little steps that make a big difference
At Bella Bodies we love bringing you beautiful, comfortable and affordable underwear but you may not know that we work really hard to bring you products that have been sustainably and ethically sourced and, that eco-friendly practices are employed along the whole supply chain. Here is a little behind the scenes look at Bella Bodies efforts to protect our planet.
1. Sustainable and eco-friendly fibres
For years now we have been using bamboo viscose for our underwear, and anyone that has worn a garment made from bamboo will know that it is amazingly soft, cool and breathable. It not only holds its shape after many many washes and lasts for ages, but the raw bamboo material is grown with no pesticides, no insecticides and no artificial irrigation. It’s the ultimate renewable resource!
Sustainability – what exactly does that word means. Environmentally speaking, this holistic term generally refers to the ability for something to be maintained at a certain level. Being a ‘natural’ fibre doesn’t necessarily mean it is sustainable. According to WWF (World Wildlife Fund) it takes more than 20,000 litres of water to produce just one kilogram of cotton which roughly equals one T-shirt and a pair of jeans.
Modal by Lenzing
We are constantly looking for fantastic new fibres that will help us make the best underwear. We always take into consideration sustainability when selecting a new fibre and have introduced into the Bella Bodies range 'Modal by Lenzing'. Modal is a cellulose fibre that is made by spinning reconstituted cellulose made from beech trees. The way beech trees grow is truly special. They multiply by ‘rejuvenation’ which means that the trees propagate by themselves. The wood from this tree is a much more sustainable option than other thirsty plants such as cotton. This is because no artificial irrigation or planting is required to grow Beechwood and Lenzing is committed to using only wood from the forests that apply forestry legislation and sustainable methods. Not only is Modal by Lenzing eco-friendly and sustainable but it’s just so darn soft which makes it the perfect choice for underwear!
Derived from nature, all LENZING™ standard Lyocell and Modal fibre types have been certified as compostable and biodegradable under industrial, home, soil and marine conditions, thus they can fully revert back to nature.
Bella Eco Innovation
In 2019 we introduced the Bella Eco range which is made from a new environmentally friendly fibre called Amni Soul Eco. Created in Brazil and produced in Italy this machine washable, fast drying, ethical & eco friendly manufactured fibre is 95% biodegradable and recyclable, soft, breathable, moisture wicking and durable. Made in Portugal under special license with each piece certified by the yarn’s inventors in Brazil, Bella Eco is part of a new generation of sustainable yarns manufactured using environmentally friendly process and when discarded to the anaerobic conditions of landfill will break down completely into organic matter within 5 years.

3. Compostable Mailing Satchels.
For over a year now we have been delivering all of our orders in compostable mailers sourced from The Better Packaging Company. These mailers cost a little more than their plastic counterpart but these amazing mailers, made from corn starch are certified AS5810-2010 for Home Composting and will break down within 90 days in a compost environment.
4. Compostable Product Packaging
We are moving one step closer to being totally plastic free! From October 2019 all of our bulk orders for stock will be packaged in comPOLY Bags, a fantastic alternative to plastic poly bags that protect your garment during shipping and whilst in storage. These are also made from cornstarch with a man made binding agent and you can compost these at home! You will see over the coming months more and more of your orders arriving in these slightly milky comPOLY bags.
